Smoke Control Systems
Automated opening vents (AOV)
Manual opening vents (MOV)
Smoke Ventilation Control Systems are designed and installed for the purpose of ventilating
smoke and the products of combustion to atmosphere, at the earliest stage of a fire incident, to
maintain clear routes within the building, as a means to aid evacuation or facilitate clear access for
the Fire Brigade.
Operation of the system(s) will be either by manual intervention or automatic detection and activation
of an electro-mechanical opening device fitted to designated window, roof vents or other such
opening units, specifically identified and installed for the purpose.
As these systems are an integral part of the safety measures within the building, it is important that
they are regularly checked, tested and maintained to ensure that when called upon to operate in
an emergency situation, they respond as designed to comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire
Safety) Order 2005.
The following recommendations are made, to ensure that the system can be maintained in good
working order and should be considered as a minimum replacement taken alongside any further
observations and requirements of the local Fire Officer, who will analyse the building and provide
additional recommendations as necessary.
